The Ute tribe are still located near their original locations, albeit in a smaller area as one would expect. The different sections of the tribe are still roughly where they were in the past. Specifically focusing on the Southern Ute, they have a map on their website that shows their current reservation location. Pictured below is that map, and surprisingly, it’s a very large reservation. If someone wants a closer view of the reservation, they can find an interactive map on this site: https://geo.southernute.com/pf-landstatus/.

On their website, you can also find information about what the reservation entails, such as all the hunting and fishing spots and rules, the nearby attractions (such as state parks), and even info on their large community center, which is said on their website to have “a 5,000 sq.ft. fitness center, swimming pool with 75 ft. lap lanes, gymnasium with two high school regulation sized basketball/volleyball courts and rock climbing wall, softball/baseball fields, archery range, and play park”. With their reservation still being very active, it’s no surprise their culture and society are still alive and well.
As stated, their reservation is still booming and are doing well as a people. Despite being put away from their original homeland and being put onto reservations, these people have shown they can power through anything to keep their culture and people alive. If I’ve learned anything from doing this blog, it has been that native people have the grit to go against all odds and pain from the European settlers and still have a fully functioning society and culture.
