The Ute tribe have a tribal council, which is their form of government. It contains what one might expect from a typical government council, with a chairman, treasurer, etc. The Southern Ute tribe have this all laid out on their website. There you can find such things as the people on the council and even their vision statement and core values.

Their core values and vision statement stood out to me because of what they are. Even someone who isn’t in the tribe can look at them and notice that they’re great things to live by. The image below is taken directly from their website and shows their vision statement and core values. The core values themselves are what I believe any government should value or at least use as a foundation upon which the government (or council) is established.

The vision statement shows what the council strives to do in the tribe without being overly complex, and it even ties into and relates to their mission statement (pictured below). With these two clearly and easily accessible just by viewing their website, they show that they’re following their 14th core value of transparency.

In the research I’ve done on the tribe, the mission statement seems pretty spot on and in line with how the tribe has been throughout their history. Seeing the Ute tribe being as established as they are is cool to me based on what the tribe and other tribes have been through!
